Set a Maximum Break Limit per Shift

Limit how many breaks staff can start from Shopify POS during a single shift.

BEFORE YOU START

  • This setting applies to breaks started from Shopify POS.

  • Staff can only start a break while they are clocked in and not already on a break.

  • Managers can still review or adjust shift activity from Shopify Admin if needed.

STEP 1: OPEN SETTINGS

  1. In Shopify Admin, open POS Time Tracker.

  2. Go to Settings.

  3. Scroll to the Breaks section.

STEP 2: SET THE MAXIMUM BREAKS PER SHIFT

In Maximum breaks per shift, enter the number of breaks staff should be allowed to start during one shift.

Use these values:

  • Leave the field blank to allow unlimited breaks from Shopify POS.

  • Enter 0 to disable POS breaks.

  • Enter a whole number, such as 1, 2, or 3, to limit each shift to that many breaks.

Important: The value must be a non-negative whole number.

STEP 3: SAVE YOUR SETTINGS

Click Save to apply the new break limit.

After saving, Shopify POS will use the new limit when staff open POS Time Tracker or refresh their status.

WHAT STAFF WILL SEE IN SHOPIFY POS

When staff are clocked in and still have breaks available, they can tap Take Break.

If they have reached the maximum number of breaks for the shift, POS Time Tracker will stop allowing another break from Shopify POS.

If a POS device has old status information, staff may see this message:

Maximum breaks per shift reached. Reopen POS Time Tracker to refresh your status.

Ask the staff member to reopen POS Time Tracker on the POS device.

EXAMPLES

  • Blank: staff can take as many POS breaks as needed.

  • 0: staff cannot start breaks from Shopify POS.

  • 1: staff can start one break per shift.

  • 2: staff can start two breaks per shift.

TROUBLESHOOTING

The Take Break button is missing

The staff member may have reached the break limit for the current shift.

They may also be clocked out or currently on a break. Staff can only start a new break while they are clocked in and not already on a break.

A staff member still cannot start a break after the limit changed

Ask them to reopen POS Time Tracker in Shopify POS so the tile refreshes their latest status and settings.

I want to disable breaks from POS

Set Maximum breaks per shift to 0, then save settings.
